"I'm so demotivated, disengaged and bored out of my mind. But I've spent 20+ years getting good at this, climbing my way up, building a reputation. What am I supposed to do, throw it all away to start all over again?"

Does this feel familiar to you? Too qualified to start over, too demotivated to stay put.
Welcome to "The Competence Cage".
The distance between expert and beginner feels like falling off a cliff. So you stay stuck, slowly dying of boredom and comfort.

You’ve spent decades climbing a ladder, working hard, putting in long hours, and following your ambition. But one day you wake up and realise that the view hasn't changed in a while. You earn decent money. People respect your opinion. But you're bored and... "something is missing".
__________
But starting over means throwing away the identity you've spent years building. It means giving up the salary, the status, the hard-won credibility, and the intoxicating feeling of being the person in the room who knows the answer.
__________
Going from expert to beginner is scary...so you stay put. You choose the certain misery of the known over the uncertainty of searching for something else.
__________
This is one of those moments in life where there are ONLY imperfect options, and standing around waiting for a perfect one to come along will cost you something even more expensive: time.
But here are some things to consider...
-
The Sunk Cost Fallacy
You are worried about wasting the previous 20 years, but you should be worried about wasting the next 20. There are few greater risks to our future, than being unwilling to let go of the past. -
The Reversible Door
Jeff Bezos categorises decisions into two types. Type 1 decisions are irreversible one-way doors. Type 2 decisions are two-way doors - reversible. Changing your career is almost always Type 2.
If you leave your job to try something new and it fails, your skills do not evaporate and your former employer would likely hire you back in a heartbeat. Therefore, the risk is not making the wrong move but wasting years procrastinating at the threshold of a door you can easily walk back through. -
The Pottery Wheel
I think we all treat our careers like clay on a pottery wheel. At the start, we experiment freely, reshaping again and again. But when it starts looking like something, we become more cautious, only making tiny adjustments terrified to ruin our hard work.
Sculptures are admired for being finished. Lives are admired for being lived. You have to be willing to reshape the person you've worked so hard to become, to give the person you desire to be a chance to form.
